Coaches

1. Be Somebody First
I've read that we become like the people we hang out with. One of those people had better be you! Get to know yourself well and enjoy your own company. Market who you are, flaws and all.

2. Coach First Then Get Training
I've seen many new coaches start a coach training program before they began coaching. Once they see how much there is to learn, they freeze like a deer in headlights. Yet these are the same people who told me they decided to become a coach because they realized they had been doing it all their lives. Dare to coach first and then get training to fine-tune your skills. You'll learn more through the coaching and you'll bring more to your classes and learn the material at a deeper level once you do sign up.

3. Describe What Coaching Does Using Examples
Don't get hung up on trying to explain what coaching is. It doesn't work. Better to demonstrate coaching, talk about a client's success or even your own success with your coach.

4. Hire A Coach
Hire a coach who is working with other coaches. Borrow your coach's systems and materials as you develop your own.

5. Get a Web Site
Get a web site that reflects who you are as much as what you do. Potential clients need to get to know you as much or more as they need your qualifications, credentials and associations. Be sure to add client testimonials and give away something (ezine, ebook, top-ten list, etc.)

6. Move Your Body Every Day
Coaching is not just a mental activity. I ask my clients to move. During a coaching session, you'll get as much insight from your body as you will from your head. Getting to know your body intimately will hone your coaching intuition.

7. Know “Who” You Want to Coach
Many coaches define their niche using demographic characteristics like age, gender, profession, income, industry, etc. It's good to be able to say, “I coach women CEO's in career transition” or “I coach divorced men looking for a new relationship." But more importantly, know the psychographic characteristics of your niche. This is the way your clients think and approach life. For instance, I coach individuals who are risk-takers, like to make change happen and want to make change a constant in their lives. Your clients will get more quickly whether or not you are the coach for them and you'll both make better choices about working together.

8. Play, Dance, Laugh and Do New Things
Coaching tackles many challenges. Your clients will make the changes they want faster if you bring your sense of adventure to the coaching call. Your lightness will make huge challenges seem effortless. And coaching is about evolving. If you're going to ask your clients to try new things, you best know how it feels and works for yourself, daily.

9. Draw From Your Past
What have you gone through and come out on the other side of? You have a lot to share. Your vulnerabilities inspire your clients. Don't let your clients perceive you as God. That's a difficult pedestal to coach from.

10. Charge More than You Feel You're Worth
You are!
